SEO professionals globally expect the industry to evolve significantly by 2026, embracing artificial intelligence and new platforms while maintaining core optimization principles, according to a recent analysis.
The findings, based on a survey of 59 SEO professionals and expert opinions from Yoast, challenged notions of the field’s decline, instead highlighting its expanding scope and adaptation to emerging technologies.
Fifty-one percent of SEOs believe the field is evolving, with 33 percent stating it is thriving, while only 10 percent anticipate a decline, according to the analysis. Experienced professionals expressed greater optimism about the future of SEO.
The expanding definition of search optimization led 39 percent of respondents to suggest relabeling SEO as ‘Search Everywhere Optimization’. However, 32 percent preferred to retain the traditional ‘Search Engine Optimization’ moniker.
Despite a general consensus, 64 percent of professionals agreed that optimizing for Large Language Models (LLMs) is fundamentally similar to traditional SEO. Yet, 59 percent are not actively optimizing for LLMs, indicating a gap between understanding and implementation.
Carolyn Shelby, an SEO expert, emphasized adapting to new platforms. Alex Moss, another industry professional, noted the enduring relevance of foundational SEO practices.
Yoast experts underscored that core SEO fundamentals, including clarity, content structure, site authority, and relevance, remain important. They advised practitioners to adapt these principles to new platforms such as AI and social media.
Regarding search rankings, 52 percent of SEOs believe they are ‘equally important’ as before, while 30 percent view them as ‘less important’. This shift acknowledges that high visibility does not always translate directly into website traffic.
The analysis suggested that companies like Google and Bing continue to drive innovation in search, influencing how SEO professionals approach their strategies.
The industry’s trajectory indicates a shift toward a more comprehensive approach to digital visibility, moving beyond traditional search engines to encompass a wider array of platforms and AI-driven interactions.
