Google’s John Mueller clarified the company’s position on using Markdown for web content, stating it is primarily beneficial for developer documentation to assist artificial intelligence systems, not for general website search engine optimization.
Mueller, a senior search analyst at Google, emphasized that while Markdown helps AI coding systems efficiently parse reference materials, its utility for other types of websites seeking improved search performance is negligible.
During his explanation, Mueller introduced a “Discovery Versus Functionality Framework” to differentiate between a website’s ability to be found through search and its capacity to help users complete tasks once on a page.
He noted that Markdown’s application in developer documentation serves as a “temporary crutch” to aid AI systems in comprehending context and simplifying complex reference pages, rather than boosting search rankings.
Mueller advised against implementing Markdown for non-developer sites, asserting it would not lead to increased sales or provide significant SEO advantages.
He added that general websites typically have more critical SEO priorities to address than adopting Markdown.
This recent clarification refines an earlier statement by Mueller, who had previously characterized the idea of serving Markdown pages to bots as “a stupid idea.”
The updated guidance carves out a specific exception for developer documentation, acknowledging its unique requirements within the evolving area of AI-driven search.
Industry experts, including SEO consultant Lily Ray, have highlighted the increasing relevance of Google’s nuanced stance as agentic search capabilities continue to advance.
Google’s approach underscores a distinction between content optimized for machine understanding in specific technical contexts and content designed for broader human discovery and engagement.
