WordPress released version 7.0, codenamed Armstrong, globally on Tuesday, featuring native artificial intelligence integration as its central innovation, marking a significant evolution in the content management system's capabilities.
The update transforms WordPress from a traditional content platform into an AI-driven environment, providing foundational tools for developers and users to leverage generative AI models directly within the system.
The release introduces four core AI building blocks designed to standardize and expand AI functionality, according to WordPress. These include the WP AI Client, the Client-Side Abilities API, the AI Connectors Screen, and the Connectors API.
The WP AI Client serves as a central, provider-agnostic interface, enabling plugins to communicate with various generative AI models. This design allows users to integrate their preferred AI providers, ensuring flexibility and choice.
Beyond content generation, the Client-Side Abilities API facilitates interaction between AI and automation tools and WordPress actions directly from the browser, WordPress stated. This extends AI's utility to broader operational workflows.
Management of external AI services and API keys is centralized through the new AI Connectors screen and Connectors API. This standardization aims to streamline future integrations and enhance overall system security and usability.
WordPress is establishing an infrastructure intended to make AI an integral part of how the content management system operates, the organization reported. This infrastructure is expected to support various workflows, including publishing, search engine optimization automation, and site design.
The extensive developer community surrounding WordPress is anticipated to utilize these new AI capabilities, according to WordPress. Developers are expected to create innovative themes, develop new website building methodologies, and design advanced data analysis tools.
