Websites using artificial intelligence for content creation frequently experience substantial long-term declines in organic search visibility and traffic despite initial gains, according to a recent analysis.
The study, which monitored more than 220 websites, found a consistent pattern where rapid growth in organic traffic was followed by steep, sustained losses, particularly on Google search.
Fifty-four percent of the monitored sites lost 30 percent or more of their peak organic traffic, while 39 percent saw declines of 50 percent or more. Twenty-two percent of these sites ultimately lost 75 percent or more of their highest traffic levels, the analysis indicated.
The typical trajectory involved a rapid increase in organic pages over six to 12 months, leading to an organic traffic peak within three to six months of the content peak. This was then followed by a steep decline within the subsequent year, according to the findings.
Many sites that previously showcased AI content as success stories in case studies have since reduced their content footprints in 2025 and 2026, removing or redirecting pages, the analysis reported.
Lily Ray, a prominent SEO expert, has frequently highlighted this trend, noting the consistent backfiring of such strategies.
The analysis utilized third-party SEO measurement data from Ahrefs and Sistrix Visibility Index. These sources corroborated broader visibility patterns across the monitored websites.
Google has repeatedly updated its algorithms to prioritize high-quality, helpful content, often penalizing content perceived as low-value or mass-produced, a factor experts suggest contributes to these long-term declines.
