The MonsterInsights website was compromised and taken offline, leading to phishing email attacks targeting its global user base, the company confirmed Thursday.
The cybersecurity breach affects a widely used WordPress plugin installed on more than 2 million websites, impacting users who rely on it for connecting to Google Analytics and gaining traffic insights.
The official MonsterInsights website currently displays a notice indicating that it is offline while the company mitigates an ongoing attack.
Users have reported receiving suspicious phishing emails, with numerous accounts surfacing on social media platforms including Facebook and X, according to user alliemims and biancavandepoel.
MonsterInsights acknowledged the attack and the subsequent phishing attempts, advising users against interacting with any suspicious emails.
The company also issued a strong warning not to download or install MonsterInsights from any third-party websites, citing the ongoing phishing attempts as a significant risk.
The plugin, which integrates with Google Analytics, is a critical tool for many website administrators seeking to understand their site’s performance and visitor behavior.
The compromise of such a widely adopted plugin underscores the persistent cybersecurity threats facing popular web platforms and their extensive user networks.
MonsterInsights said in a statement that it is actively working to restore its services and secure its platform following the incident.
Users are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity directly to MonsterInsights as the company continues its efforts to resolve the breach.
