MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Google announced Tuesday the launch of its AI-powered Universal Cart, a new smart shopping system designed to integrate price monitoring, product compatibility checks, and automated purchasing across its various platforms.
The initiative aims to streamline the online shopping experience by allowing users to manage purchases directly within Google Search, Gemini, YouTube, and Gmail, with autonomous purchasing capabilities based on user-defined rules.
Universal Cart actively monitors prices, promotions, and product availability across these Google services, according to a company statement. The system can also detect potential product incompatibilities, such as PC components, and suggest suitable alternatives before a purchase is finalized.
A key component of this new ecosystem is the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open-source standard developed in collaboration with major tech and commerce companies including Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Salesforce, and Stripe. This protocol facilitates seamless checkout processes directly within Google’s interface.
Furthermore, the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) will enable an AI agent to execute autonomous purchases on behalf of the user. This functionality will operate under strict, user-defined parameters, ensuring purchases align with individual preferences and budgets, Google said.
The company stated that Universal Cart will initially be available in the United States this summer, rolling out on Google Search and the Gemini app. Integration with YouTube and Gmail is slated to follow. Google also indicated future expansion plans for Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
The introduction of Universal Cart and its associated protocols represents a significant step toward a more interconnected and automated online retail environment. Major retailers and brands such as Nike, Sephora, Target, Walmart, Wayfair, Shopify, Fenty, and Steve Madden are expected to leverage the new system.
