MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Google rolled out a new feature allowing users to explicitly control their Discover feed content, potentially creating a significant visibility channel for niche websites and smaller creators.

The tool, initially named ‘Tailor Your Feed‘ and later ‘Add topics to your feed,’ enables users in the United States to use natural language prompts to customize the content they see, according to reports from VentureBeat and Search Engine Roundtable.

This explicit control mechanism transforms user prompts into direct actions, such as ‘SEE_MORE’ or ‘SEE_LESS,’ likely powered by a Large Language Model, VentureBeat reported.

The system utilizes a new back-end pipeline that prioritizes content not previously popular within the Discover platform, offering an alternative to traditional popularity algorithms.

Users’ prompts and the resulting content are attributed with labels like ‘You asked to see’ and are recorded in their My Activity history, providing transparency on how the feed is customized.

This shift allows users to actively seek out specific, less mainstream content, which could significantly benefit creators and publishers who struggle to gain traction through conventional algorithmic discovery.

For instance, a user interested in hyper-local news might prompt the feature to show more content from a specific small-town newspaper, bypassing general news trends.

Mississippi Today, an independent news organization, was cited by Search Engine Roundtable as an example of a publisher that could benefit from this direct user-driven content selection.

The feature’s ability to surface content that might otherwise be overlooked by broad popularity metrics represents a strategic move by Google to cater to diverse user interests and support a wider array of content producers.

Google has been testing the feature within its Search Labs program, indicating a broader push toward more personalized and user-controlled content experiences across its platforms.

The company has not yet provided a specific timeline for a wider global rollout of the feature beyond its current availability in the U.S. Search Labs.
