MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Google announced an artificial intelligence-driven transformation of its Search engine at its I/O 2026 developer conference, introducing autonomous AI agents, a redesigned search box and real-time personalized interfaces.
The overhaul marks the most substantial change to Google Search in decades, integrating advanced AI capabilities powered by the company’s latest Gemini model to deliver more proactive and tailored user experiences globally.
Google reported that its AI Mode in Search has surpassed 1 billion monthly users, with query volume more than doubling each quarter, indicating rapid adoption of AI-powered search features.
Gemini 3.5 Flash now serves as the default model for AI Mode, underpinning all new functionalities within the updated search engine, according to the company.
The Google search box has undergone its first complete redesign in over 25 years, now accepting multiple input types and offering advanced anticipatory suggestions to users.
New autonomous information agents can continuously monitor the web for user-defined topics, providing real-time alerts and comprehensive summaries, Google stated.
The search engine can also generate personalized visual interfaces, dashboards and mini-applications dynamically based on individual user queries.
Google’s Personal Intelligence feature, which connects Search to services like Gmail and Google Photos, is expanding its availability to nearly 200 countries without requiring a subscription.
The company said AI-powered booking and phone call management features for various services will become available in the United States for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers by summer 2026.
