Google integrated its user-selected Preferred Sources feature into AI Overviews and AI Mode responses globally Tuesday, allowing users to identify links from their chosen news outlets within AI-generated content.
This expansion aims to give users more control over the information prioritized by artificial intelligence in search results, according to statements from the company.
The number of user-selected Preferred Sources increased significantly, reaching more than 345,000, Google reported. This figure marks a substantial rise from the 90,000 sources recorded when the feature first expanded globally.
New carousel formats are also being introduced for search results on developing topics. These include a carousel specifically for article links accompanied by contextual information and another for firsthand perspectives drawn from forums and social media platforms.
The company also confirmed that the ‘Highly Cited‘ label will be expanded to a greater number of web article links in standard search results. This label will now also indicate when an article explicitly references a highly cited source.
Google stated that users click through to their Preferred Sources at twice the rate of other links provided in search results. Duncan Osborn, a Google executive, previously highlighted the importance of user choice in shaping search experiences.
The move represents a significant shift in how AI-generated content will prioritize information, particularly as AI Overviews become more central to Google’s search offerings. Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO, has frequently emphasized the company’s commitment to responsible AI development.
John Mueller, a Google Search Advocate, also discussed the evolving nature of search algorithms and the role of diverse sources.
