Google CEO Sundar Pichai acknowledged that the company’s new AI Overviews feature can be “more opinionated than it should be,” raising concerns about accuracy and its impact on search results during a recent interview.
Pichai’s comments, made during a Decoder podcast interview, addressed the evolving nature of Google Search and its implications for both users and content publishers globally.
The CEO acknowledged the issue after being presented with a live search result for “best Chromebook” that demonstrated the opinionated nature of the AI-generated summaries, according to the interview.
Pichai also discussed publisher traffic, stating that Google’s technology is increasingly filtering out low-quality “bounce clicks,” which he described as a “natural evolution” of the search experience.
Condé Nast CEO Roger Lynch‘s recent directive for his teams to plan for zero search traffic was mentioned during the discussion.
Pichai declined to directly challenge Lynch’s decision or address specific claims from publishers regarding falling traffic from Google Search.
He highlighted a new Search feature designed to prioritize sites a user subscribes to, treating them as preferred sources and reflecting individual user preferences.
Alphabet, Google’s parent company, reported a 19 percent increase in Google Search and other revenue during its first-quarter earnings.
However, Google has not publicly released publisher-facing traffic data to substantiate its claims about the reduction of “bounce clicks.”
The company’s AI Overviews feature aims to provide concise, AI-generated summaries directly within search results, potentially reducing the need for users to click through to external websites.
Critics have expressed concerns that this could further diminish traffic to news organizations and other content creators who rely on Google Search for audience engagement and revenue.
Google has been under scrutiny regarding the accuracy and potential biases of its AI-generated content, particularly as it integrates more artificial intelligence into its core products.
