Google launched its May 2026 Core Update globally this week, marking the second significant algorithm adjustment of the year designed to improve the relevance of search results for users.
The update follows the March 2026 Core Update and represents a standard effort by Google to better reward high-quality, relevant and satisfying content across all types of websites.
The rollout of the May 2026 Core Update is anticipated to take up to two weeks to fully complete, impacting all languages and territories where Google operates, according to the company.
Website owners and administrators are advised against making immediate, drastic changes to their sites in response to the update, Google said.
Instead, the company recommended monitoring website traffic and performance metrics throughout the rollout period and waiting for its full completion before drawing conclusions or implementing major adjustments.
Google deploys thousands of updates annually to its search algorithm. John Mueller, a Search Advocate at Google, previously indicated that the company conducts more than 700,000 tests, leading to approximately 4,700 updates each year.
Core updates are generally broader in scope than regular daily adjustments, often resulting in more noticeable shifts in search rankings and website visibility.
These updates are not punitive but rather reflect Google’s continuous refinement of how it assesses content to deliver the most helpful results to searchers.
Experts typically suggest that sites focusing on creating original, high-quality and user-focused content are best positioned to perform well over time, regardless of specific algorithm changes.
