Google CEO Sundar Pichai indicated comfort with artificial intelligence (AI) potentially replacing traditional search functions, suggesting a future revenue model combining subscriptions and advertising.
The shift represents a significant strategic pivot for Google, which has historically relied almost exclusively on advertising revenue from its classic search engine, and comes amid growing public discussion about AI’s broader impact.
Pichai views the transition to an AI-powered search mode as a gradual process rather than an abrupt change, aiming for a seamless user experience, according to statements.
He affirmed that sources and links would remain integral components of AI-generated answers, even if their visibility might not directly translate to referral traffic for publishers.
Google’s future monetization strategy may involve a hybrid approach, blending subscription services with traditional advertising, rather than solely depending on the current search ad model, Pichai said.
Internal metrics show positive user responses to the AI Mode, Pichai claimed, despite increasing public concerns regarding AI’s environmental impact and substantial energy consumption.
The company sees the evolution towards AI Mode as a continuous development designed to integrate new capabilities without disrupting user familiarity.
