Google Search Console is rolling out new reporting that provides publishers with insights into how their content performs within AI Overviews and other generative AI features, the company announced Tuesday.
The new “Generative AI” report, found under the Performance section, will display content impressions from AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover’s AI features, offering transparency and control for website owners.
The report is currently being deployed, primarily in the United Kingdom, with a global rollout anticipated in the future, according to Google.
Publishers can utilize the data to filter by pages, countries, devices, and dates, though the report focuses solely on impressions and does not include metrics such as clicks, rankings, or click-through rates.
Industry analyst Marie Haynes noted that this data could help publishers identify which of their pages Google’s AI models deem relevant.
Google’s initiative is partly a response to pressure from regulatory bodies, including the United Kingdom’s Competition and Markets Authority, which has advocated for improved attribution and transparency regarding content usage in AI features.
In addition to the reporting, Google Search Console is introducing a new toggle that allows website owners to opt out of having their content used to ground generative AI features.
This opt-out mechanism is designed to be more accessible than the existing Google-extended tag, Google stated.
Publishers are encouraged to cross-reference the new impression data with standard performance metrics to gain a comprehensive understanding of user engagement.
Content that demonstrates firsthand experience, original research, or in-depth analysis is likely to be more valuable to searchers seeking information beyond basic AI summaries, according to expert analysis.
