Google introduced a new Lighthouse report in Chrome Canary on Tuesday, designed to help website owners evaluate and optimize their sites for discoverability by artificial intelligence agents, the company announced.

The new feature, termed ‘Agentic Browsing,’ focuses on assessing a website’s readiness for AI agents by examining AI agent discoverability, WebMCP integration and the proper evaluation of the LLMs.txt file.

Users can access the ‘Agentic Browsing’ report within Chrome Canary by right-clicking on a webpage, selecting ‘Inspect,’ and navigating to the Lighthouse tab, Google stated.

Key components for achieving agentic readiness include ensuring AI accessibility through the accessibility tree, utilizing WebMCP for structured exposure of website tools, and implementing the LLMs.txt file for agent-specific instructions.

The LLMs.txt file functions similarly to the established robots.txt file, providing markdown information to assist agents in understanding a site during inference time. This file’s purpose is distinct from its impact on Google Search ranking, according to Google.

Initial tests of Google’s own documentation page for the new Lighthouse report revealed potential issues that could hinder AI agents, indicating areas for improvement even within Google’s own properties.

Marie Haynes, an expert in the field, noted that the introduction of this report underscores Google’s commitment to guiding webmasters through the digital environment as AI agents become more prevalent.

The initiative reflects a broader industry trend toward preparing digital content for consumption and interaction by advanced AI systems, impacting how information is structured and presented online.

Companies like Shutterstock, which rely heavily on digital content, may find these new guidelines important for ensuring their extensive libraries are optimally prepared for AI agent interaction and data processing.

Google emphasized that proper integration of these elements will be vital for websites seeking to ensure their content is effectively utilized by the next generation of AI-driven browsing and information retrieval tools.
