Google confirmed its May 2026 core algorithm update concluded on June 2, following an 11-day rollout that began on May 21, impacting search rankings globally.
The update, which commenced on May 21 at 8:40 a.m. PDT and finished on June 2 at 5:40 a.m. PDT, represented Google‘s second core update and fourth confirmed search-related adjustment in 2026.
Third-party tracking tools indicated elevated volatility throughout the entire rollout period, with some industry observers noting its impact was more pronounced than a previous update in March, according to reports.
SEO practitioners, including Glenn Gabe of G-Squared Interactive and Lily Ray of Amsive, reported significant effects across various industry verticals, different countries and numerous individual websites.
Marie Haynes of Marie Haynes Consulting Inc. also observed substantial shifts in search engine results pages during the update’s deployment.
Google advised website administrators to wait until at least June 9 before attempting to analyze their Search Console data for a clean comparison window to assess the update’s full impact.
This recommendation aims to allow sufficient time for the algorithm to settle and for data to fully propagate across Google’s systems.
The company typically releases several core updates annually to improve the overall quality and relevance of its search results.
Core updates are broad changes to Google’s search algorithms and systems, designed to ensure that the search engine continues to deliver helpful and reliable information to users.
Previous core updates have often led to noticeable fluctuations in website traffic and rankings for an extended period after their conclusion.
The May 2026 core update’s prolonged volatility underscores the ongoing challenges for webmasters and SEO professionals in adapting to Google’s continuous algorithmic refinements.
