Google began integrating generative artificial intelligence (AI) performance reports directly into its Search Console on Thursday, signaling that AI visibility is an extension of traditional search engine optimization (SEO) rather than a separate discipline.
The new reporting features, which include data for AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover’s AI functionalities, are initially rolling out to a select group of websites in the United Kingdom before a wider global deployment, according to the company.
These reports provide website owners with data on impressions, indicating how frequently their pages appeared within Google‘s various AI features. However, the reports do not currently include click-through rates, focusing instead on content presence within AI-driven results.
Google’s decision to embed AI visibility within Search Console asserts that optimizing for generative AI, often termed ‘generative engine optimization’ (GEO), is not a distinct practice from established SEO methodologies.
A control mechanism has also been introduced, allowing content creators to opt their material out of AI responses if they choose. This offers publishers more granular control over how their content is utilized by AI systems.
While Google’s new tools offer valuable insights into its own AI performance, industry analysts cautioned against over-reliance on a single-engine view. They noted that comprehensive tracking across multiple AI platforms, such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity, still necessitates the use of cross-engine AI visibility tools.
This integration marks a significant step in how Google defines and measures content performance in an increasingly AI-driven search environment.
