Google’s AI Overviews have resulted in a 39.8 percent reduction in organic clicks, primarily affecting informational queries, according to a recent analysis by Omnicom Media Group.
This substantial decline occurred without a measurable difference in bounce rates or time on site for the remaining clicks, challenging Google‘s assertions that AI Overviews absorb only low-value visits.
The reduction in organic traffic was most pronounced for informational searches, where users previously clicked through to websites for answers, Omnicom Media Group reported.
Separately, a longtime Bing leader announced his retirement, signaling a change in leadership at the Microsoft-owned search engine, the company confirmed.
In related developments, a case study revealed that many Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) fixes often fail because browsers frequently target incorrect elements, especially in template-driven layouts, Uxify reported.
This issue can hinder efforts to improve website performance and user experience, David Swinstead of Uxify said.
Furthermore, simulated Claude AI agents demonstrated a tendency to retrieve pricing information from third-party sources when encountering access errors or unreadable pricing data on a brand’s official website, Siteline reported.
This behavior suggests potential challenges for brands in controlling the accuracy of pricing information disseminated by AI agents.
Google has been rolling out AI Overviews more broadly, with executives like Liz Reid stating the feature aims to provide quick answers directly in search results.
However, the new data indicates a direct impact on the traffic driven to publishers and businesses through traditional organic search.
The analysis did not support the claim that the AI Overviews primarily absorb clicks that would have otherwise been low-value or resulted in quick bounces, Omnicom Media Group stated.
The retirement of the Bing executive comes as the search engine continues its efforts to integrate AI capabilities into its own offerings, competing with Google in the search sector.
Experts like Georgi Petrov and Vijay V. have contributed to the understanding of LCP issues, highlighting the complexity of optimizing web performance metrics.
The findings regarding AI agent behavior with pricing pages underscore the need for businesses to ensure their website content is easily accessible and machine-readable to prevent misinformation.
