PARIS — Online search behaviors among French consumers have significantly transformed in less than a year, driven by the rapid adoption of generative artificial intelligence and social media platforms, a new study reported.
The shift indicates a challenge to traditional search engines and requires an omnichannel strategy for brands seeking to connect with consumers, researchers said.
Heroiks Pulse, in collaboration with Toluna Start, surveyed 1,058 French individuals aged 18 and over between March 12-17, 2026. The study found that 35 percent of French people altered their online search habits within the past year, a figure that rose to 58 percent for Gen Z respondents and 41 percent for Millennials.
Generative AI tools are now used by 41 percent of the French population for online searches, the study reported. This includes 53 percent of Millennials and 35 percent of Gen X users, indicating a rapid and transgenerational adoption of the technology.
Despite the emergence of new tools like ChatGPT and Google‘s Gemini, traditional search engines such as Google still retain the trust of 70 percent of users, according to Heroiks Pulse. However, 63 percent of respondents found answers from these engines unconvincing, and 39 percent described the results as too generic.
Social media platforms have also become a key channel for information discovery. The study found 68 percent of French users turn to social media for news, 51 percent for trend information, and 50 percent for consumer reviews.
Platform usage varies significantly by generation, with Instagram and TikTok being popular among younger demographics for discovery, while Facebook retains a user base across broader age ranges, Peak Ace, a digital marketing agency, said in a statement discussing the study’s implications.
The findings suggest that brands must adapt their digital strategies to encompass this multi-channel search ecosystem. An effective approach now requires presence and tailored content across traditional search engines, generative AI platforms, and various social media channels to engage with diverse consumer segments.
