Global businesses must overhaul their local search engine optimization strategies as Google‘s AI Overviews increasingly dominate results, significantly reducing visibility for traditional local packs.
AI Overviews now appear for 68 percent of local searches, while conventional local packs, which display nearby businesses on a map, are present in only 39 percent of the same queries, creating a 29-point discrepancy, according to research from Whitespark.
This shift necessitates that businesses move beyond traditional local SEO tactics and focus on creating content that is fact-dense, well-structured, and directly answers user questions, Kevin Indig, a prominent SEO consultant, said.
Informational and hybrid intent queries, such as “how long does an eye exam take near me” or “average cost of dental implants in Phoenix,” trigger AI Overviews between 92 and 97 percent of the time.
Effective location pages now require comprehensive information architecture, including names, addresses, phone numbers (NAP), service areas, hours, frequently asked questions, testimonials, project examples, and pricing tables.
Google’s vision AI also analyzes photos for geographic legitimacy, making intentional local imagery crucial for businesses seeking citation within AI Overviews, according to Steve Toth, a local SEO expert.
Businesses must ensure geographic legitimacy through images of local landmarks and maintain entity consistency across all online platforms.
The research from Whitespark highlighted that traditional local SEO methods are no longer sufficient to secure top visibility in Google’s evolving search environment.
