Businesses globally are developing new search engine optimization strategies to identify and mitigate significant website click-through rate losses potentially caused by Google‘s new AI Overviews.
These generative AI features, integrated into Google Search, have been linked to substantial reductions in organic traffic, prompting companies to refine their analytical approaches despite limitations in Google’s own reporting tools.
A study conducted by the Indian School of Business and Carnegie Mellon University indicated that AI Overviews could decrease webpage clicks by as much as 38 percent, according to researchers.
Identifying specific click loss from AI Overviews remains challenging, as Google’s Generative AI features performance report in Search Console lacks the granular detail needed for precise analysis.
To pinpoint click reductions, experts advise businesses to first identify high-traffic keywords that now trigger AI Overviews in search results.
Subsequently, companies should compare pre- and post-AI Overview click metrics, including click-through rates, impressions and search rankings, for those specific keywords.
A clear indicator of AI Overview-induced click loss is a scenario where a website maintains stable search rankings and impressions but experiences a noticeable decline in its click-through rate, industry analysts reported.
Once affected keywords are identified, businesses should categorize them into two strategic groups: ‘Defend’ and ‘Adapt’.
The ‘Defend’ category includes commercially important keywords where click recovery is deemed possible through targeted SEO adjustments.
Conversely, the ‘Adapt’ category comprises commercially vital keywords for which click recovery may not be feasible, requiring businesses to adjust their content or monetization strategies.
Analyzing Impact and Response#
The emergence of AI Overviews necessitates a more sophisticated approach to SEO, moving beyond traditional ranking metrics to focus on user engagement and intent within the new search environment.
Google has been gradually rolling out its AI Overview feature, which provides summarized answers directly on the search results page, often drawing information from multiple sources.
This summarization capability means users may find answers without needing to click through to individual websites, directly impacting organic traffic for many online businesses.
Companies are now tasked with not only optimizing for traditional search algorithms but also understanding how their content is being interpreted and presented by generative AI features.
Developing content that is both informative for users and structured in a way that AI Overviews can accurately extract and attribute information is becoming a key focus for SEO professionals.
The shift highlights an evolving dynamic between search engines and content creators, pushing businesses to innovate their digital strategies to maintain visibility and user engagement.
