Global demand for human professionals to refine and correct artificial intelligence-generated content has surged, with job listings for “AI cleanup” rising significantly on major freelance platforms over the past year.
Freelancer.com reported an 87 percent increase in job postings for correcting AI-generated work between August 2025 and June 2026, totaling 10,760 global posts, underscoring a paradox where artificial intelligence requires substantial human intervention.
Upwork data showed a 70 percent year-over-year rise in gigs related to AI remediation, while Fiverr noted that searches for “AI cleanup” services grew more than 20-fold from 2023 to 2026.
Matt Barrie, chief executive officer of Freelancer.com, highlighted the unexpected volume of work required to fix AI outputs, stating that clients often underestimate the effort needed for these tasks.
Designers, writers and video editors are now dedicating considerable time to refining AI-produced content, according to reports from The Guardian.
Todd Van Linda, a freelance writer, told The Guardian that correcting AI-generated text often involves as much effort and cost as creating original content from scratch.
This surge in cleanup work contrasts with earlier predictions that AI would displace human jobs, particularly in creative fields.
A study published in Management Science found that demand for some freelance writing and coding work fell by 21 percent after the launch of ChatGPT, while image creation posts dropped 17 percent following the introduction of image generators.
Nathan McConnell, a freelance designer, explained that AI tools like Google‘s Gemini and YouTube‘s AI video summarizer still produce what he called “AI slop” that requires human polishing to be usable.
Kym Dunbar, a freelance writer, noted that clients frequently request AI-generated content to be rewritten to remove robotic phrasing or factual errors.
Another freelancer, Lisa, reported that clients often seek human editors to ensure AI-generated content aligns with specific brand voices and avoids generic language.
The current trend suggests that while AI can generate content rapidly, human expertise remains vital for quality control, accuracy and nuanced communication.
