Artificial intelligence platforms accurately recognized 96 percent of brands but rarely mentioned them in answers to buyer research questions, indicating a significant visibility gap, a new global study by digital marketing firm Victorious reported Monday.
The findings highlight a challenge for brands seeking to be identified by consumers using AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Meta AI for early-stage purchasing decisions.
Victorious analyzed 175 brands across five verticals: legal, healthcare, software as a service (SaaS), financial services and e-commerce/retail. When directly prompted, AI platforms correctly described 96 percent of these brands.
However, when asked general category research questions, 89 percent of the brands were never mentioned in the AI-generated responses, according to the study.
The study found that factors such as referring domains and third-party web mentions showed only a moderate correlation with AI mentions, at 0.49 and 0.45 respectively.
Brands with fewer than 2,000 indexed web pages mentioning them were named in AI answers in only 3 percent of cases, Victorious reported.
In nearly all instances, 99.99 percent, citations in category research prompts pointed to third-party websites rather than brand-owned domains.
For early-journey prompts focused on problem awareness, AI frequently utilized educational content found on company websites. Despite this, the AI rarely named the specific brand, mentioning it in only 0.10 percent of answers.
Victorious said the discrepancy between high recognition and low mention rates suggests brands need to re-evaluate their digital strategies to ensure visibility within AI-driven search environments.
