News publishers opting out of Google‘s artificial intelligence features risk losing visibility in the prominent Top Stories carousels integrated within AI Overviews, according to recent industry analysis.
This potential trade-off forces publishers to weigh the use of their content by AI systems against maintaining crucial news visibility in a rapidly changing search environment across the United States and United Kingdom.
Google is now incorporating the Top Stories carousel directly into its AI Overviews, a shift from its previous placement as a separate module lower on search results pages, NewzDash reported.
Data from NewzDash indicated that 15.5 percent of U.S. news searches and 17.46 percent of U.K. news searches that included Top Stories featured the carousel inside an AI Overview.
John Shehata of NewzDash stated that if a publisher chooses to opt out of Google’s AI features, they would likely be removed from these integrated Top Stories carousels within AI Overviews.
Google’s AI Opt-Out setting, which began to be considered by publishers on June 17, specifically covers content inclusion in AI Overviews.
A separate control, known as Google-Extended, is designed for training Gemini models and does not impact a publisher’s inclusion in standard Google Search results or AI Overviews, Google previously clarified.
The integration means that publishers who decline to have their content used by Google’s AI tools could see a reduction in the visibility of their news articles in a key, high-traffic section of search results.
This development presents a strategic challenge for news organizations aiming to balance content protection with audience reach in the era of AI-powered search.
