Most Firms Use AI as Tool, Few Integrate Systems, Report Says

Global organizations predominantly use artificial intelligence as an individual tool rather than integrating it into core systems, according to a new report from Notion.

The study, titled ‘Great Renovation,’ found that 88 percent of companies worldwide are employing AI primarily for basic tasks, while only 12 percent have achieved deeper, systemic integration of the technology.

Senior leaders, including chief executive officers, are six times more likely to be advanced AI users compared to individual contributors, challenging the idea that top-down mandates for AI adoption occur without personal engagement, the report indicated.

Organizations demonstrating advanced AI maturity, categorized as Levels 3-4, prioritize enhancing customer experience and developing new capabilities, Notion reported.

Conversely, early adopters at Levels 1-2 largely focus on achieving efficiency gains and reducing operational costs, according to the findings.

The report also highlighted a steeper learning curve for AI adoption as organizations progress, with 68 percent of Level 4 organizations reporting that their investment in AI outpaces their readiness to implement it effectively.

This contrasts with Level 1 organizations, where 48 percent reported similar challenges, suggesting that scaling AI integration introduces more complex hurdles.

Advanced AI adopters distinguish themselves through several key practices, including deeper integration with existing enterprise systems and the establishment of strong governance frameworks, Notion stated.

These advanced firms also consistently measure the impact of AI initiatives using concrete metrics, a practice less common among early adopters.

Avinash Kaushik, a prominent analytics expert, has frequently emphasized the importance of moving beyond superficial AI usage to truly embed the technology within business processes.

The ‘Great Renovation’ report underscored a significant gap between merely utilizing AI applications and fundamentally transforming organizational operations with AI-driven systems.

The findings suggest that while AI adoption is widespread, most companies are only beginning to tap into the technology’s full potential for strategic transformation.
