YouTube to Reduce Visibility of Channels Reposting Content

YouTube announced Monday it will update its recommendation system globally to reduce the visibility of channels that re-upload or aggregate content without substantial modifications, prioritizing original Shorts.

The change aims to encourage creators to produce unique content by significantly decreasing the reach of accounts primarily built on reposted clips from other creators, according to the company.

Rene Ritchie, a YouTube Creator Liaison, detailed the policy shift on Oct. 1, emphasizing that creators must add their own commentary, analysis, or storytelling to remixed content for it to be considered original.

Content that YouTube will not classify as original includes simple voice-over descriptions of on-screen events, minor technical edits, or bulk changes made using templates, Ritchie said.

The video-sharing platform already maintains monetization policies that require significant alterations to borrowed content before it can earn revenue.

However, this new update specifically targets the recommendation system and content reach, rather than directly impacting monetization eligibility, YouTube stated.

Other major digital platforms, including Instagram and Facebook, have similar policies in place.

These platforms also limit the reach and monetization eligibility for accounts that primarily rely on reposted content, according to their respective guidelines.

The move is expected to significantly impact content aggregators and re-uploaders on YouTube, potentially reducing their overall visibility and encouraging a greater focus on original content creation across the platform.
