YouTube will change its method for counting views on long-form videos and live streams globally starting August 24, registering a view as soon as a video begins playing.

The new approach shifts the public metric toward initial exposure rather than requiring a minimum watch time, potentially increasing reported view counts without directly affecting creator monetization.

Under the revised system, a view will be recorded the moment playback commences, eliminating any minimum duration requirement, YouTube said. This change mirrors an alteration made to Shorts view counting in March 2025.

YouTube plans to introduce a separate metric called ‘Engaged Views‘ within YouTube Analytics under Advanced Mode. This new metric will provide creators with insights into audience interaction beyond the initial click.

The platform clarified that the updated public view count will not affect monetization for creators participating in the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). Earnings and eligibility for the YPP will continue to be based on ‘engaged watch hours’ and ‘qualified watch hours’ or ‘qualified Shorts views.’

While public view counts are expected to rise, YouTube emphasized that creator revenue and channel qualification will still depend on audience engagement that extends beyond the initial click.

The company stated that its goal is to provide a more transparent and consistent view counting methodology across its diverse content formats.
