A global audit of 50 major websites revealed on June 12, 2026, that most search engine optimization (SEO) teams are failing to prepare for advanced artificial intelligence (AI) understanding and agent interaction, despite efforts in basic AI retrievability.
The findings indicate a significant gap between current SEO practices, which largely focus on making content discoverable by AI, and the emerging need for AI to truly comprehend and interact with website capabilities, the audit stated.
While nearly all audited websites had implemented measures to enhance basic AI retrievability, almost none had optimized for advanced AI comprehension, according to the audit.
The report highlighted that close to two-thirds of the examined websites left the question of which AI bots could access specific content entirely to chance.
The audit utilized a new AI readiness framework that defines three distinct layers of AI visibility: Retrievability, which assesses whether AI can fetch content; Attribution and Meaning, which evaluates AI’s ability to understand content and ownership; and Agent Transaction and Discovery, which focuses on AI agents’ capacity to interact with website functionalities.
The comprehensive framework incorporates 27 audit elements, categorized into Established, Emerging, and Frontier standards, to provide a detailed assessment of AI readiness.
The June 12 audit specifically scored 12 Established signals against this agentic readiness framework, uncovering considerable deficiencies in advanced AI optimization across the websites.
The results suggest that current digital marketing strategies are largely unprepared for the sophisticated comprehension and transactional capabilities that advanced AI search will require.
