Global e-commerce protocol UCP released its fourth version, v2026-08-25, on August 25, 2026, adding significant features for grocery commerce and laying technical groundwork for the hospitality and restaurant sectors.

The update, announced globally, marks a strategic expansion of UCP’s capabilities beyond general retail, introducing specialized tools and schema changes to support more complex industry requirements.

Key enhancements in v2026-08-25 include new geolocation functionalities for physical store integration, standardized formats for operating hours and support for weight-based ordering, all designed primarily for grocery use cases, UCP said.

The protocol also introduced breaking schema changes affecting fulfillment structures, buyer consent mechanisms and profile signature keys, which will necessitate updates for existing integrations.

To guide future development, UCP established two new technical councils: the Food Technical Council and the Lodging Technical Council. These bodies include representatives from major industry players such as DoorDash, Uber Eats, Booking.com and Marriott.

These councils will be responsible for developing sector-specific specifications and ensuring the protocol meets the unique demands of food delivery, restaurant services and accommodation bookings.

Payment processing capabilities were also expanded in the latest version. UCP now supports 3D Secure 2 authentication, enabling enhanced security for online transactions, and features for managing payment schedules and splitting payments across multiple methods.

The organization stated that this version also shifts its versioning strategy from traditional numbering to a date-based labeling system, such as v2026-08-25, to better align with platform and business release cycles.

While the new version establishes technical foundations for these sectors, UCP clarified that advanced artificial intelligence interface features for grocery ordering or hotel booking are not yet available.

Companies like Google, Shopify, Stripe, Block (Square), Toast, Amadeus, Expedia, Hilton and Trip.com are among the organizations that could potentially leverage or integrate with the expanded UCP functionalities.
