Microsoft received a patent on August 25, 2026, detailing a system for its Bing search engine to generate AI-powered overviews exclusively for complex user queries, according to patent US 12,717,798 B2.

This strategy aims to optimize resource allocation by deploying generative artificial intelligence only when a search query requires synthesis from multiple sources, differentiating it from approaches used by competitors like Google.

The patent, granted to Microsoft Technology Licensing, describes a method where the search system calculates a ‘complexity score’ for each user query. Simple requests, such as searching for ‘youtube’ or solving ‘2+2’, will receive direct answers or traditional search results without triggering generative AI, according to the patent.

Conversely, complex queries like ‘analyze the impact of climate change on global agriculture’ will activate the generative AI system, which then drafts a comprehensive response.

The process involves a ‘query fan-out’ mechanism, where the system generates several alternative sub-queries related to the original complex request. These sub-queries are subsequently evaluated by ‘small generative AI models’ to identify the most relevant links from which to synthesize the final response, the patent stated.

The resulting ‘generative search results document’ is designed to include a direct answer, thematic sections, and clear citations to the original source pages. This structure is distinct from Google’s ‘AI Overview‘ feature, suggesting a nuanced approach to integrating AI into search results.

Ian Sorin is listed as an inventor on the patent, which outlines a resource-efficient method for integrating advanced AI capabilities into a widely used search platform.

Microsoft’s approach suggests a strategic focus on delivering high-quality, synthesized information for queries that genuinely benefit from AI summarization, rather than applying generative AI broadly to all search interactions.
