Marketing hiring at major technology companies decreased by 36 percent, significantly more than engineering roles, according to a recent report from SignalFire.

The decline in marketing positions at 12 major tech firms, including Alphabet and Microsoft, far outpaced the 11 percent reduction in engineering hiring, suggesting a strategic shift in talent acquisition within big tech.

SignalFire’s State of Talent Report, which analyzed in-house roles at major tech companies and early-stage startups, indicated that design roles experienced the most substantial decrease in hiring among major tech companies, falling by 48 percent.

Product management hiring also saw a significant drop, decreasing by 39 percent at these large firms, the report stated.

In contrast to major tech companies, engineering hiring at early-stage startups increased by 7 percent, SignalFire reported, highlighting a divergence in recruitment strategies across different company stages.

The report also noted higher attrition rates for marketing and design professionals compared to engineers. Marketing roles had an attrition rate of 12.2 percent, while design roles saw 12.6 percent attrition.

Engineering attrition, by comparison, stood at 9.2 percent, according to the data.

The study focused specifically on in-house positions and did not include the broader marketing job market, SignalFire clarified.

The findings align with broader industry trends reported by organizations like Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc., which have documented widespread layoffs across the tech sector over the past year.
