MOUNTAIN VIEW, United States — Google is developing a new search paradigm called ‘Persistent Autonomous Search‘ that will continuously monitor for answers to user queries, fundamentally changing how information is retrieved.
This system aims to transform search from a transactional interaction into an ongoing task-based process, addressing situations where immediate, satisfactory answers are unavailable, according to company statements.
Liz Reid, a Google executive, discussed this “agentic” or “task-based” search approach, where a query remains active in the background until relevant information surfaces.
The initiative seeks to resolve user frustration of repeatedly checking for information that is not yet available or does not meet desired quality standards.
A patent published in February 2026 by the United States Patent Office, titled ‘Autonomously Providing Search Results Post-Facto,’ details this invention. The patent is a continuation of an earlier filing.
According to the patent documentation, the system detects when a query initially lacks a satisfactory answer and automatically delivers one when it becomes available.
This invention is specifically designed to function within the context of an AI assistant, enhancing its ability to provide comprehensive and timely information.
The patent outlines six distinct scenarios that would trigger this autonomous search capability. These include instances where no initial results meet predefined quality criteria, when information is not yet available, or when existing resources are later refined and improved.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai previously indicated that the future direction of search is task-based, aligning with the principles underlying this new development.
This shift suggests a move away from users initiating a new search for every update, toward a system that proactively delivers information as it evolves.
