Google’s John Mueller indicated recently that website folder structures for international sites should prioritize analytics benefits over common search engine optimization (SEO) concerns, especially regarding duplicate content for home markets.
Mueller’s guidance suggested that while traditional SEO issues such as page authority splitting or duplicate content are often central to site architecture discussions, their practical impact in specific international configurations might be less significant than the ability to easily segment and analyze data.
The discussion arose from a query on Reddit where a user expressed concern about a U.S.-based client utilizing localized folders, such as /en-us/, for content identical to the main site. The user worried about potential SEO penalties from this duplication and split page authority.
Mueller, a senior webmaster trends analyst at Google, recommended maintaining a consistent structure. He noted that incorporating language and country codes, like /en-us/blog/, for U.S. content on an international site using similar URL patterns (e.g., /LL-CC/anything) could significantly simplify the filtering and slicing of metrics by country and language.
He clarified that for U.S. content, there would likely be no discernible SEO difference between using a general /blog/ folder or a more specific /en-us/blog/ folder. This perspective shifts the focus from perceived SEO disadvantages to the practical advantages of data organization.
Mueller’s response, according to the Reddit discussion, largely bypassed traditional SEO considerations such as the impact of keywords in category names or the perceived risks of duplicate content, which he deemed not critical in this particular scenario.
This stance highlights Google’s emphasis on data-driven decision-making for complex international website setups, suggesting that the ease of analyzing user behavior and site performance can outweigh theoretical SEO concerns in certain architectural choices.
