STANFORD, California — Google CEO Sundar Pichai delivered his second commencement address at Stanford University on Sunday, advising the Class of 2026 to embrace optimism, confront difficult subjects, and pursue their passions.
Pichai, who studied at Stanford two decades ago, returned to share personal and professional insights, emphasizing that many significant life decisions often appear more critical in the moment than they prove to be over time.
He outlined three core principles for life’s complexities, drawing from his own experiences, including his arrival in the United States from Chennai, India, and the challenging initial development phases of Google Chrome.
The tech executive encouraged graduates to choose optimism, stating that maintaining a positive outlook can significantly influence outcomes, even when faced with uncertainty, according to a transcript of his speech.
Pichai also urged the new graduates to prioritize tackling difficult subjects and problems, suggesting that confronting challenges directly leads to greater learning and innovation.
His third principle centered on following one’s passion, a theme he illustrated with anecdotes from his career at Google, where he rose through the ranks to become chief executive officer of the technology giant.
Pichai’s parents attended a commencement ceremony for the first time, and he publicly acknowledged and thanked them during his address.
The speech offered a contrast to previous Stanford commencement speakers like Microsoft‘s Steve Ballmer, focusing on personal development and resilience rather than purely technological advancements.
Jane Earl, a Stanford faculty member, noted that Pichai‘s message resonated with students facing a rapidly changing world, offering timeless advice.
Pichai’s address at Stanford follows a tradition of prominent leaders sharing wisdom with graduating classes, aiming to inspire and guide them as they embark on their post-academic careers.
