Google’s John Mueller advised webmasters to fix conflicting product availability metadata on their websites instead of trying to understand how Google resolves such discrepancies.
The search engine has not publicly disclosed its internal hierarchy for reconciling conflicting information when multiple data points, such as on-page content, structured data, and product feeds, provide different availability statuses for an item.
Mueller, a Senior Webmaster Trends Analyst at Google, recommended ensuring consistent signals across all data sources rather than analyzing Google’s potential resolution methods, according to statements made on Bluesky.
The advice followed an observation by Sebastián Galanternik, who noted a specific instance where a product page displayed an item as out of stock, while the server HTML and structured data indicated it was available.
Conflicting metadata, which can also include mismatched dates, complicates Google’s ability to accurately interpret and select the correct value for indexing and display in search results.
Previous issues related to inconsistent pricing across website content, product feeds, and schema markup have led to product disapprovals within Google Merchant Center, underscoring the importance of data consistency.
Webmasters should routinely compare their site’s HTML, the rendered Document Object Model (DOM), and product feed data to guarantee that all signals regarding product availability are uniform, Mueller emphasized.
