Google updated its online review guidelines globally, explicitly prohibiting unverified or undisclosed incentivized reviews and warning that non-compliance could lead to manual penalties against websites.
The new directive targets reviews not based on genuine product or service experiences and those written in exchange for benefits like money, discounts, or free products without clear disclosure, Google said.
Websites failing to adhere to these updated rules may face manual actions, which can impact their search ranking and visibility, according to Google.
Publishers can request a re-examination of their site after correcting any violations, Google stated in its updated documentation.
This change is integrated into Google’s broader Reviews System, which assesses first-party review content published on websites.
The primary focus of the update is on content authenticity and eligibility for rich results in search, rather than technical aspects of structured data.
The company emphasized that the update aims to ensure content publishers prioritize authenticity and real expertise in their online reviews.
These stricter guidelines are expected to impact content publishers by requiring greater transparency and authenticity to avoid penalties and maintain eligibility for enhanced search result features.
