Google updated its review snippet guidelines globally Thursday, prohibiting fake and undisclosed incentivized reviews, which could result in manual actions against non-compliant websites.
The search giant added three new explicit prohibitions to its review snippet documentation, specifically targeting the authenticity of user-generated content, according to the company. These updates aim to enhance the reliability of reviews displayed in search results.
Among the newly banned practices are the submission of fake reviews and the publication of incentivized reviews that are not clearly and prominently disclosed to users. Google stated that these measures are intended to improve the overall quality of review content.
Websites found to be in violation of these updated guidelines face the potential for manual actions, which can negatively impact their visibility and ranking within Google’s search engine results.
Google already employs an algorithmic system, known as the ‘Reviews System,’ which is designed to evaluate first-party review content for its quality and authenticity. The recent guideline additions complement this existing system.
The company indicated that the update reinforces its commitment to providing users with trustworthy information and reflects its ongoing efforts to combat manipulative practices in online content.
Content creators and website administrators are advised to review the revised guidelines to ensure compliance and avoid potential penalties. Google emphasized the importance of transparent and genuine user feedback for its search ecosystem.
