Google Search Advocate John Mueller said on Bluesky that generative AI search impressions are counted when a website link appears in AI Overviews or AI Mode, addressing a key metric for site visibility.

Mueller clarified that an impression is registered only if a link is directly visible or if a user actively expands a section to reveal it, a detail for search engine optimization (SEO) professionals.

The explanation followed inquiries from Nicola Agius, director of SEO and Discover at Reach PLC, concerning specific scenarios such as brand icons, combined cards, and clustered sites within the new generative AI features.

Google’s official help documentation defines an impression as a link appearing to a user in a generative AI feature, but Mueller’s response provided more granular detail for complex display formats.

The current Search Console report for generative AI features, which is undergoing limited testing with select sites in the United Kingdom, does not yet include click data, making impressions the primary available metric for performance.

All links presented within a single AI Overview are currently attributed to a shared position, according to Google.

Google has indicated plans to integrate additional metrics into the report over time as the generative AI search features expand beyond the initial testing phase.
