Google’s AI Overviews are slated to launch in France in the coming months, potentially as early as 2026, despite ongoing legal disputes with French media over content compensation.
The delay in France stems from the country’s neighboring rights law, enacted in 2019, which mandates digital platforms to pay press publishers for reusing their content.
Sébastien Missoffe, CEO of Google France, announced the planned rollout, which integrates Gemini-generated answers directly into search results.
French media organizations have expressed concerns that AI Overviews could significantly reduce traffic to their websites.
The Autorité de la concurrence, France’s competition watchdog, fined Google 250 million euros in March 2024 for using French press content to train its Gemini AI without prior agreement.
Google stated that AI Overviews appear less frequently for news-related queries and that the feature continues to highlight media viewpoints with direct links.
The company also noted it pays tens of millions of euros annually in neighboring rights to French publishers.
The ongoing legal friction highlights a broader global debate between technology giants and news organizations regarding intellectual property and fair compensation in the age of artificial intelligence.
The dispute has seen Google reach agreements with some publishers, such as The New York Times, while facing legal action from others, including French regional newspaper Ouest-France.
Google has previously introduced initiatives like Google Extended, allowing publishers to control whether their content is used for AI training.
The launch in France will test the balance between Google’s AI innovation and the regulatory demands of a country committed to protecting its media industry.
