Google announced five new updates to its generative artificial intelligence Search experiences globally Thursday, aiming to increase link visibility and provide more context for users while addressing publisher concerns about referral traffic.
The enhancements, which apply to features like AI Mode and AI Overviews, introduce new ways for links to appear, making AI-generated responses more of a starting point for web exploration.
Among the new features are subscription highlighting, topic suggestions following AI responses, previews for discussion and social media links, an increase in inline links, and link hover previews for desktop users.
Google had previously indicated that subscription highlighting would be available in the Gemini app, and has now confirmed its integration into AI Mode and AI Overviews. Early tests of this feature have demonstrated an increase in click-through rates, according to the company.
The company is also adding more context to links originating from discussion forums and social media platforms, such as displaying the names of creators and communities directly within the search results.
Hema Budaraju, a Google executive, said the updates were designed to make AI responses feel less like a “dead end” and more like an invitation to explore the broader web.
Despite the focus on boosting link visibility, Google has not released specific data regarding the potential impact of these changes on referral traffic for publishers.
The initiative comes as publishers have voiced concerns that AI-powered search summaries could reduce the number of clicks directed to their websites, potentially affecting their advertising revenue.
The updates are part of Google’s ongoing effort to refine its generative AI offerings within its core search product, balancing the utility of AI answers with the need to support the web ecosystem.
