Microsoft’s Bing team published a framework detailing how content indexing for artificial intelligence answers, known as grounding, differs from traditional search engine ranking requirements.
The conceptual post from Bing provides insight into the distinct processing methods necessary for AI systems to generate accurate and reliable responses, moving beyond standard information retrieval.
Bing identified five key measurement areas where indexing for AI grounding diverges significantly from conventional search: factual fidelity, source attribution quality, freshness, coverage of high-value facts and the handling of contradictions.
For grounding, content must often be broken down into smaller, retrievable chunks, a process that can alter the original substance of a web page, according to the team. Source attribution serves as a core signal for AI grounding, indicating that not all indexed content holds equal value as evidence for AI systems.
A stale fact within a grounding system can lead to a misleading AI response, a more critical issue than its impact on ranking in traditional search, where it primarily affects result relevance, the company explained.
Madhavan, a member of the Bing team, highlighted that grounding systems are designed to ensure the availability of specific facts and their sources. These systems cannot arbitrate between contradictory sources, meaning they rely on clear, consistent information.
Abstention, or declining to provide an answer, is considered a valid and necessary outcome for grounding systems when supporting evidence is either missing, outdated or conflicting, according to the framework.
Iterative retrieval, which involves asking follow-up questions and combining various pieces of evidence, represents a significant design difference for AI grounding systems compared to standard search queries.
This conceptual explanation follows Microsoft‘s recent initiatives aimed at improving grounding tools and enhancing publisher visibility, including the introduction of its AI Performance dashboard.
