Google’s John Mueller and Martin Splitt said Tuesday that while artificial intelligence coding tools can generate functional websites quickly, they require specific human technical direction to achieve optimal search engine optimization.
The search giant’s experts highlighted that relying solely on AI for website development, a practice sometimes termed ‘vibe coding,’ often results in poor SEO performance without explicit human input, underscoring the continued necessity of technical understanding.
Mueller, a senior search analyst at Google, compared providing vague SEO instructions to an AI to working with a developer who lacks specialization in search, leading to similarly subpar outcomes.
He noted that he achieved significantly better results when he provided detailed instructions to AI tools, including specifics on domain names, canonical setups, sitemap files, and robots.txt configurations.
Martin Splitt, a developer advocate at Google, recounted an instance where an AI tool repeatedly incorporated an unwanted library despite his attempts to steer it away from that choice, illustrating the limitations of automated processes.
Both experts acknowledged that the promise of ‘vibe coding’ is to eliminate the need for traditional coding knowledge, but they stressed that technical comprehension remains vital for making informed decisions and improving results.
Mueller previously identified several SEO challenges in an AI-generated Bento Grid Generator, including issues with crawlability and inaccessible content, according to past discussions.
He clarified that AI-generated websites are not inherently identifiable as ‘vibe-coded’ by Google’s systems.
However, Mueller cautioned against over-reliance on AI for content generation, stating that such practices raise questions about the ultimate value provided to users.
The discussions from Google’s representatives emphasize that even with advancements in AI, human expertise in SEO and technical web development remains an indispensable component for creating effective and discoverable online presences.
