Google clarified May 15, 2026, that traditional search engine optimization (SEO) practices remain fundamental for visibility within its emerging artificial intelligence (AI) search features.
The guidance, issued by Google‘s John Mueller, dismissed the need for radical new strategies or technical adjustments like ‘llms.txt’ files, asserting that AI Overviews and AI Mode rely on the same core ranking and quality systems as classic Google Search.
Mueller stated that the company’s AI features primarily utilize Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), which draws information from indexed web pages to formulate AI responses. He added that query fan-out mechanisms generate related questions to address complex user queries effectively.
Google prioritizes content that demonstrates genuine expertise or experience, distinguishing it from generic information that AI models could easily generate. The company emphasized that content should be structured primarily for human readability and satisfaction, not for algorithmic consumption.
Quality images and videos also play a role in content effectiveness, according to the guide. Google explicitly cautioned against mass content production aimed at covering every possible query variation.
The company views such large-scale content generation as an abuse of content and ineffective, given AI’s ability to understand synonyms and user search intent. Fundamental technical SEO aspects, including indexation, crawlability, and JavaScript accessibility, remain critical for content to be visible to Google’s AI systems.
