Google announced it will deploy its AI Overviews and AI Mode features in France by Sept. 23, 2026, formalizing compensation and control measures for French press publishers.
The technology giant sent a letter to French publishers on June 29 outlining its plans to address regulatory concerns and comply with strict French and European copyright and neighboring rights regulations, according to Google.
Publishers will receive remuneration for their content used by the AI engine, building on existing agreements, the company said. Approximately 450 French publishers already compensated under classic neighboring rights will also receive additional payments for AI-related usage.
Lou Pichard, a spokesperson for Google, stated that the company is committed to ensuring publishers maintain control over how their content appears within the new AI features.
The deployment of these AI tools was previously delayed in France due to the country’s stringent legal framework concerning intellectual property, according to reports.
Google’s AI Overviews will present AI-generated summaries prominently at the top of search results, a feature that has raised concerns among some publishers about potential impacts on organic click-through rates to their websites.
AI Mode, powered by Google’s Gemini large language model, will offer a conversational search experience, synthesizing information from multiple sources.
David Eichholtzer of Ouest-France emphasized the importance of transparency regarding content usage and impression data for publishers.
Google has pledged to provide publishers with clear data on how often their content contributes to AI Overviews and AI Mode responses.
The company said it will also offer publishers options to manage the appearance of their content within these new AI search functionalities.
This initiative marks a significant step for Google in the complex regulatory environment surrounding AI and content rights in Europe.
