Google published seven new “agent-friendly” rules for websites, largely reiterating existing web accessibility guidelines, according to a report by Search Engine Journal.

The new guidelines, detailed on Google‘s web.dev platform, aim to improve how AI agents interact with and interpret web content, drawing parallels between AI readiness and human accessibility standards.

Matt G. Southern of Search Engine Journal reported that these rules are presented as suggestions, with Google not explicitly linking them to search rankings or consequences for AI products.

Developer Kasper Kulikowski audited his website, nohacks.co, against these new guidelines and identified one critical failure among the seven recommendations.

Kulikowski found his site failed Rule 5, which advises developers to “Set cursor: pointer in CSS,” due to a change in the default button styling within Tailwind CSS version 4.

Tailwind v4 altered the default cursor for buttons to ‘default’ from ‘pointer’, which was the standard in version 3, Kulikowski reported.

This change impacts the visual signal that indicates interactivity, an important element for AI agents that rely on vision models to understand web page elements, according to Kulikowski.

Omkar More, writing on Search Engine Journal, emphasized that websites designed to be “agent-ready” inherently improve the experience for human users, aligning with recommendations from the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).

The guidelines stress the importance of clear visual cues and semantic HTML for both artificial intelligence systems and individuals with disabilities.

Developers using frameworks like Tailwind CSS are now prompted to review their styling defaults to ensure compliance with these new recommendations, particularly regarding interactive elements.

Google’s initiative suggests a growing focus on how AI agents process and understand web content, pushing developers to adopt practices that benefit a broader range of users and automated systems.
