Google Ads implemented Customer Lifecycle Goals, integrating audience targeting with bidding strategies to help advertisers focus campaigns on acquiring new clients or retaining existing ones, according to recent guidance from the platform.
These specialized goals optimize campaign performance by leveraging user-defined customer lists uploaded to Audience Manager, primarily supporting value-based Smart Bidding strategies such as Target Return On Ad Spend (ROAS) or Maximize Conversion Value.
Performance Max campaigns within Google Ads support all available Customer Lifecycle Goals, offering a comprehensive approach to managing customer segments.
Campaign-level goals include ‘Customer acquisition goals,’ often referred to as New Customer Acquisition (NCA), which aim to target new customers by either excluding existing ones or de-prioritizing their bids.
Conversely, ‘Customer retention goals’ are designed to re-engage existing customers, tailoring ad delivery and bidding to specific segments of an advertiser’s current client base.
Customer acquisition modes offer several options, including ‘New Customer Value,’ ‘High Value New Customer,’ ‘New Customer Only,’ and ‘New Prospect Mode,’ each providing distinct targeting and bidding adjustments to attract different types of new clients.
For existing customers, retention modes include ‘Re-engagement,’ ‘High Value Re-engagement,’ and ‘Loyalty Program Members,’ which focus on specific segments with tailored bidding adjustments to foster continued engagement.
However, many businesses find that Customer Lifecycle Goals can be overly complex, according to Google Ads. The system was initially developed for large retailers with extensive customer bases and sophisticated marketing needs.
For smaller businesses or those with simpler objectives, basic audience targeting methods may suffice for excluding existing customers or focusing on specific segments without the full implementation of these advanced goals, Google Ads reported.
Understanding the specific needs of a campaign and the scale of the business is important for determining whether to implement these comprehensive lifecycle goals or to opt for more basic audience targeting strategies, experts noted.
