Open Knowledge Format v0.2 Adds Trust Layer for Web Content

The Open Knowledge Format (OKF) released version 0.2 of its specification on July 25, introducing a new “trust layer” designed to compel websites to explicitly define content provenance and staleness for machine readability.

This update aims to address a significant gap in how machines, particularly future AI agents, understand and evaluate web content, though no such agents currently utilize the format.

The newly added trust layer incorporates specific fields for content origin, producer identity, verification status (human or machine), a designated staleness date and the overall lifecycle status of the content. The format does not, however, compute an actual trust score, according to the developers.

Technical SEO specialist Jono Alderson indicated that the immediate benefit of implementing OKF v0.2 lies in its ability to prompt website owners to conduct a self-audit of their content. This process forces clarity regarding content relationships and trust signals from a machine-first perspective, Alderson said.

Alderson suggested that many existing websites function as mere “brochures” or “husks,” primarily shaped by the imprint of search engines like Google, without effectively conveying meaning and connections to machines.

The inclusion of a “staleness date” field in OKF v0.2 requires content creators to make explicit decisions about the expected lifespan of their information. This requirement can expose underlying assumptions about how quickly content becomes outdated.

Currently, no AI agents are configured to read OKF bundles. Furthermore, the adoption of this format is not linked to search engine rankings or visitor traffic, making its present value primarily an internal auditing tool for web publishers.
