French digital economy stakeholders are increasingly advocating for websites to adopt local domain name extensions, such as .fr and .bzh, over the globally prevalent .com, citing benefits for national digital sovereignty and economic support.
The strategic choice of a domain extension signals intent to both users and search engines, influencing trust, geographic positioning, and the financial beneficiaries of domain registrations, according to digital experts.
While the .com extension is frequently chosen by habit, it primarily benefits sites targeting an international audience and financially supports the American company Verisign, which manages the extension.
In contrast, extensions like .fr and .bzh contribute to the French digital economy through nonprofit organizations such as Afnic and association .bzh, respectively, fostering local digital development.
France currently has more than 4.45 million .fr domains and approximately 13,500 .bzh domains, reflecting growth but indicating a lower per capita usage of national extensions compared to countries like Germany (.de) and the Netherlands (.nl).
Choosing a local extension, such as .fr or .bzh, can significantly enhance local search engine optimization (SEO), build greater trust with a domestic audience, and affirm a territorial identity online, according to reports from digital analytics firm Abondance and association .bzh.
Abondance and association .bzh have made available a free guide to assist website owners in migrating to the .bzh extension, further supporting the push for local digital presence.
The Fondation Afnic pour la solidarité numérique also promotes the use of local extensions, emphasizing their role in strengthening the French digital ecosystem.
The shift toward local extensions is presented as an important step for France to assert greater control over its digital infrastructure and ensure that economic benefits remain within the country.
