AI Agents Reshape Google Ads, Forcing Advertiser Strategy Shifts

Artificial intelligence agents are fundamentally altering Google Ads and the broader e-commerce paid media environment, compelling advertisers globally to immediately adjust their digital strategies.

This significant shift involves AI agents, such as Google’s ‘Buy for Me’ service, executing purchases on behalf of consumers, moving the focus of advertising from human-facing creatives to structured data feeds.

Salesforce reported that AI and agentic commerce were responsible for approximately 67 billion dollars in global sales during Cyber Week 2025, accounting for 20 percent of all orders processed.

Product feeds have become key bidding signals for these AI agents, which assess items based on structured data points like price, availability, shipping details, and specifications, rather than traditional ad copy.

Google also introduced ‘Direct Offers,’ a new paid advertising surface within its AI Mode, where merchants directly fund promotions, enabling Google to negotiate deals for shoppers.

Existing Google Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are already serving advertisements into AI Mode, making it important for advertisers to enhance feed quality and utilize new reporting controls.

The advent of agentic checkout mechanisms, including ‘Buy for Me,’ is impacting conversion tracking, requiring advertisers to understand how these agents complete transactions.

Organizations like Wayfair, Chewy, Quince, Shopify, Etsy, Walmart, and Target are adapting to this changing environment, along with payment providers such as Visa, American Express, Stripe, PayPal, and Mastercard.

OpenAI and Perplexity are among the other entities contributing to the rapid development and deployment of AI technologies influencing commerce.

The shift necessitates an understanding of how AI agents interpret product data and complete purchases to maintain effective advertising performance.
