Stripe launched a new commerce protocol called ‘Projects’ on April 30, 2026, enabling artificial intelligence agents to autonomously buy, configure, and manage cloud infrastructure on behalf of human users.
The new protocol marks a significant expansion of Stripe‘s agentic commerce capabilities, shifting AI agent functionality from retail transactions to the provisioning of digital infrastructure and services.
Projects allows AI agents to perform a range of tasks including creating new accounts, purchasing plans and resources, acquiring domains, configuring infrastructure settings, and managing ongoing subscriptions, according to Stripe.
The initial focus of Projects is on developer-platform layer cloud infrastructure, with launch partners including Cloudflare, Vercel, and Netlify.
These partners were selected due to their existing API-first product surfaces, which facilitate quicker integration with the new protocol, Stripe said in a statement.
Matthias Biilmann, a representative for the launch partners, indicated that this development could streamline operations for developers by automating infrastructure procurement.
Stripe clarified that Projects operates in parallel with its existing Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), which currently handles retail commerce for companies like Etsy, Walmart and Glossier.
A core distinction between the two protocols is that Projects facilitates the purchase of ‘capabilities,’ specifically infrastructure provisioning, rather than ‘products’ such as retail goods.
Both Projects and ACP leverage shared payment infrastructure, including Shared Payment Tokens and Stripe Radar, the company’s fraud detection system.
While the initial target category is developer-adjacent cloud infrastructure, Stripe anticipates future expansion into broader software-as-a-service (SaaS) subscriptions and general-purpose cloud services offered by providers like AWS, Azure and GCP.
The company views Projects as an evolution in agentic commerce, moving beyond simple product acquisition to more complex, autonomous management of digital assets.
