Global brands face significant challenges in achieving sustained visibility and citations from artificial intelligence systems due to content’s rapid obsolescence and an overreliance on short-term distribution strategies, according to industry experts.
Most digital content becomes irrelevant within 48 hours, necessitating a shift from campaign-based promotions to a compounding distribution system to maintain brand authority and relevance in an increasingly AI-driven information ecosystem.
A 2026 study by Foundation reported that only 10.15 percent of AI citations directed users to brand-owned domains, a figure that dropped to a mere 2.2 percent for unbranded search queries.
Harry Clarkson-Bennett, a content strategy expert, emphasized that effective content distribution begins with thorough research to identify relevant channels, rather than habitually relying on familiar platforms.
Creating high-value, non-commodity content is essential for earning citations and backlinks from AI systems and other reputable sources, Clarkson-Bennett stated. This includes original research, proprietary data, and strong viewpoints that distinguish a brand.
The study indicated that assigning a single owner for content distribution represents the most impactful organizational decision to ensure consistent execution and maximize reach.
Companies like Ramp, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google increasingly rely on vast datasets, making it imperative for brands to ensure their content is discoverable and deemed authoritative by these systems.
Traditional media outlets such as Bloomberg Terminal, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, CNBC, and Reuters often produce the type of high-value content that earns consistent citations.
The findings underscore a critical need for brands to re-evaluate their content strategies to build a system that continuously distributes valuable information, thereby increasing brand visibility and authority over time.
